More Help To Protect The Island’s Precious Coral Reef

FishThe National Fish and Wildlife Foundation along with the Coral Reef Conservation Program has generously awarded several grants to help stop damage to coral reefs in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Hawaii’s University of Hawai’i-Manoa received $87,500 to assist finding the source of pollution in Maunalua Bay on O’ahu. This bay has a large variety of corals and has been badly polluted by poor land use and bad flood-control practices. The Moloka’i invasive species control committee was granted $69,010 to assist in their fight to remove invasive algae from all over the Island and to educate the community on how to prevent its spread through community clean-up events, workshops and outreach. The Community Conservation Network of Kaua’i, O’ahu and the Big Island were granted $62,000 to help develop public-private partnerships to keep the state’s coral reefs healthy.
