New Kapolei Community Center: the “Kroc Center”

A brand new 100,000 square foot community center  - the "Kroc Center" - will begin construction down the road from what will become the new campus of UH West Oahu. This new community center will be the largest in Hawaii, with strong support from the Salvation Army.

The Kroc Center will feature two major swimming pools, an education-training center and pre-school…all housed into one. The center will be named the "Kroc Center" after Ray and Joan Kroc. Joan Kroc who is the widow of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, donated $1.5 billion to The Salvation Army to endow centers like it across the country. The idea being to create a campus where people, regardless of social or economic status, can enjoy an equal opportunity to reach their full potential. According to Mayor Mufi Hanneman, "the development is going to enable to old, the young the middle aged to come together to enjoy recreation, enjoy sports, enjoy culture.”

Because Kroc required The Salvation Army to raise additional funds in support of and to sustain the Kroc Center, Don Horner, President and Chief Executive Officer of First Hawaiian Bank, who chairs the Kroc Steering Committee said, "While we are very pleased that so many in the community have embraced Mrs. Kroc’s vision of hope and opportunity for Hawaii, we still have a way to go to raise the final funding needed to complete the project."

And it’s likely they will for such a great Hawaiian cause :-)
